Monday Myth Debunkers: The Earlier Your Self Tape Gets In…

The early bird catches the worm, right?

Wellll, not so much if the bird is an actor auditioning for the new Freeform series.

Let’s break down why this is nothing but another #actormyth.

First, let’s remind all of you lovely, hard-working actors that deadlines DO matter and deadlines are created for a reason.

We don’t just slap on a random date & time that sounds fancy.

We calculate these deadlines based on a number of factors with the prominent reason being timeliness to when we plan to pitch to our producers.

(Pitching = sending a link of choices to our creative team so they can make a casting decision).

We try our very hardest to give you a generous deadline but sometimes (many times) our hands are tied due to the schedule. And even more so due to Covid (we need ample time for testing).

Very rarely do we stop our casting process because an amazing self-tape rolls in and we send that ONE person to the producers early because it’s THAT good (although it HAS happened!)

MUCH more commonly, we’ll purposefully wait until the deadline so that we don’t piece-meal spam our producers. We want to make sure we are giving them ALL of our choices in ONE place.

What that means for you? It simply means: we’re waiting for you!

More simply put, keep these dos/don’ts in mind when it comes to a self-tape deadline:

DO take the time to create a well-worked/crafted self-tape
DO try to be as off-book as possible (but holding your sides is totally fine)
DO have a reader (please). A virtual reader is absolutely fine!

DON’T rush your self-tape in order to send it in earlier
DON’T be late for the deadline
DON’T get your tape to your agent at the 11th hour, at least give yourself a few hours buffer. Your agent may not get to your email in time.

To sum it up: 𝕢𝕦𝕒𝕝𝕚𝕥𝕪 𝕠𝕗 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕥𝕒𝕡𝕖 > 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕤𝕡𝕖𝕖𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕖𝕤𝕤 𝕠𝕗 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕥𝕒𝕡𝕖.

Happy taping!
