Terminology Tuesday: Beat

Keep reading if you’re looking for some fresh beats…

#castingjokes

A beat is a moment in the script that propels the character’s story forward.

Each scene may be comprised of several different beats. Some beats are subtle, while others are obvious.

There are hundreds of beats within the pages of a feature-length film. Every time the action of a character changes, a new acting beat begins.

Your job: to never miss a beat.

Literally.

Missed beats are missed moments that can lose someone the job.

Writers will specifically look to see if an actor got all the beats on camera in their taped audition.

We will always do our best to set you up for success and give you as much information as we can about the scene, character and story arc. This information should help you find and understand these beats more clearly.

If you’re in the room with us, we most certainly won’t let you walk out the door without playing out an important beat.

Actors who are able to honor these beats and bring indisputable authenticity to their characters in those moments are what make our casting hearts sing.

They are truly special moments that make us 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 something.

And as we all know, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 is the ultimate goal.
