Did you know?
You’ve probably heard of CDs needing to get studio/network approval for an actor before they are allowed to hire them. But what does that exactly mean? And what does it look like?
In TV, we are working with 1-2 studios and a network or streamer. For studio films, we are typically only working with 1 studio. And for indies, it’s a production company. In any case, we would need final approval from these entities before we could even send out the offer.
Sometimes approvals are quick + easy. Other times they send us right back to square one.
Some of the reasons a studio/network or production company may not approve an actor can be one of the following reasons:
◼️ They didn’t feel the actor fit the original concept of the role.
◼️ They are using that actor in another project and are worried about shooting or advertising conflicts.
◼️ They have worked with the actor before had a difficult time with them.
◼️ They are curious to see a backup choice in comparison with the first choice.
Many actors are curious what that approval email looks like and what is included. The actual template of an approval email can differ from office to office but generally, we include:
1. The actors name, character + type of role
2. The actor’s headshot
3. The audition + demo reel/clip (depending on the size of the role)
4. IMDB link (sometimes)
5. Master list (if required)
