Actors, let’s discuss a bit of a taboo subject: the moment before you begin in a live

Actors, let’s discuss a bit of a taboo subject: the moment before you begin in a live audition.

You’ve been sitting in the virtual or in-person waiting room for some time, trying to prepare and get yourself into the character’s headspace as best as you can.

Then you enter the “room” to cheerful smiles, or people joking with one another or just a vibe that does not match the character’s current situation.

You briefly step into the role of YOU in order to greet everyone and now you’re instantly expected to be a drugged, tied-up hostage on the brink of starvation.

That aint easy.

At the end of the day, we want to see the best audition and you want to give the best audition.

And many times that requires some brief recalibrating.

And that’s ok.

Even if you are not told to start when you’re ready, actors, please make sure you are respecting the immense amount of time you are putting into this craft and ask for a moment if you need it.

Acting class won’t teach you how to immediately switch from friendly actor to hostage victim, but what it will do is teach you how to quickly recalibrate and reach the character’s inner thoughts in a quick and effective way.

And asking for a reasonable amount of time to do this is absolutely valid.
