You were spot on for the role. You read the breakdown meticulously. You put in the work. Maybe you even coached…
And crickets…
What does it mean? Is there still a chance? Was it something you did? Something you didn’t?
These questions and concerns, while common, can be draining and time consuming.
So what can you do?
You cannot expect feedback on every single audition.
While we wish we could, it’s just not feasible.
When you find yourself in the the actor mental loop, here are a few things you CAN do:
1. TRUST that you put your best work forward. And most importantly, someone saw it. And possibly, the creative team saw it as well. TRUST that hard work does not go unnoticed and forgotten.
2. Ask your rep (don’t do this for every audition, their time needs to be respected as well). But if you’re feeling doubtful, ask them something specific. They have seen thousands of auditions themselves and can either give you some constructive criticism or help you feel more assured.
3. Do ask for feedback! But let’s lay some ground rules. Please be extremely mindful about when you do this. You do not want to get in a habit of relying on feedback to feel confident in your craft. However, maybe this audition felt a little more special than the others. Talk to your rep about it first.
Pro tip: don’t just “ask for feedback,” otherwise, you’ll likely get a templated response like “they did well, just not going further on this one.” Not the most helpful, we know. Instead, see if you can ask something more specific like, “Is it going any further?”, “What did you think of their choices?”, or “Is there a note they could use? They can re-tape ASAP.”
We cannot guarantee that you’ll get the answer you were hoping for, or any answer for that matter. But what we’re trying to convey is that trust and specificity when asking for feedback can help to alleviate some of the actor mental loop after an audition.
And if you get feedback and it’s good? TRUST that, too!
You are on the right track. Put in the work, trust it, and let it go.
