There are some key differences between a big market like LA or NY and smaller (but still busy markets) like New Mexico and Texas. Here are the main ones:

Los Angeles/NY
• Higher volume of auditions and productions
• More competitive, with a wide range of experienced and developmental actors
• Higher cost of living
• Abundant networking events, industry mixers, and opportunities to network
• Stricter adherence to union rules
• Abundance of high-profile acting schools as well as more in-person educational opportunities
• Most people live an industry-focused lifestyle

Smaller markets
• Fewer volume of production, but potentially less competition
• More focused on independent films, local commercials, and occasional TV productions and studio films
• Lower cost of living
• Fewer formal networking opportunities, but potentially easier to build local connections
• Mix of union and non-union work, with more flexibility in regards to union status
• More modified local hire opportunities in surrounding areas
• More of a relaxed pace without as much emphasis on the TV/film industry

At the end of the day, we highly recommend focusing on where you want to live FIRST. You can be a successful actor in ANY city. Remember, you are a person first and an actor second. Where will you be the most happy? Start there.
