We’ve talked about this topic before but let’s do a part 2 and talk a little bit more about each of these options and why we would choose to sort a particular way.
1. Submission Times: This might seem like an obvious reason. Sorting this way allows reps who submit first/early to get first consideration. It helps us see submissions come through in real time.
2. Alphabetical: A lot of casting directors choose to sort alphabetically because it makes it easier to be more mindful about setting an actor up with a specific talent rep (especially helpful to give that rep “credit” for pitching them). It also helps to easily talk to colleagues or reps about particular actors who have been submitted.
3. Random: The random algorithm defaults to slate shots first, followed by submission times specifically where profiles have media attached being first.
Many CDs choose to sort either alphabetically or via submission times as it’s most helpful to both actor and talent rep. But of course, some do choose to sort randomly.
Some also choose to only view submissions with media attached, especially for roles larger than a 1-liner.
In any case, know that most CDs will continue to view each and every submission, no matter how it’s sorted, as long as it’s submitted in a timely manner (within 12-24 hours of it being released).
